Telephone Recorders: Connecting Up
Is my telephone able to work with a telephone recorder and how would it connect?
The majority of homes are connected to Analogue Telephone Lines and the majority of Commercial premises are connected to Digital Telephone Lines. Most Telephone Conversation Recorders will work on both types of telephone lines. This is also true for home users who have internet connections through their telephone lines such as Broadband.
Handset connection
A telephone usually provides the option of disconnecting its handsets’ curly cord from the telephone. Providing this is the case conversation recorders can be installed via the handset socket in the telephone. The telephone then acts as a filter to enable high quality recordings to be made regardless of the type of telephone line including ISDN and Broadband.

Telephone line connection
Alternatively you may find that analogue telephone lines are connected to cordless telephones where the person can use a mobile handset. In this case the former installation method would not be applicable so installation can be completed via the telephone line wall socket. To enable this a doubler must be used in the wall socket to allow both the telephone and the recorder to be used.

ADSL Broadband line
If the telephone line provides a broadband internet service as well, a filter must be used to prevent the noise from the internet being transmitted onto the recordings. Therefore the installation would be telephone line socket, micro filter, telephone doubler, telephone and telephone recording device.
The benefit of a telephone wall socket installation is that all telephone conversations on the line will be recorded, irrespective of which telephone extension is used. So for example, if you have the recorder in your home office, it will still record calls made from the sitting room. Alternatively if you choose to install via the telephone handset you can ensure that you only record conversations on that actual extension. Both installations therefore have their benefits.
A good design of Telephone Conversation Recorder will allow you to decide which method you want to use and have all the necessary accessories for either method.
