Telephone Recorders Myths

I thought that it is illegal to record telephone conversation?
This is not true. Recording telephone conversations can be an important business tool and many companies do so. See the legal aspects section for more information.

I thought that only large companies recorded telephone calls.
Increasingly, many small organisations are using conversation recorders to improve customer service and provide staff training. Devices capable of recording from any telephone costing around £50 are readily available.

I worked for a company where all calls were recorded, but I was told that it would take days to get someone to get a particular recording to me.
Modern recording devices save the recordings with a Time & Date stamp. They also allow users to attach a name to a particular recording. Some even record a telephone number. All this allows a particular call to be traced easily and quickly. These can sometimes even be e-mailed to someone requesting a copy.

All recording devices have to make a beeping sound during the telephone conversation.
This used to be a requirement many years ago, but is no longer true. It is legal to record telephone conversation without a beeping noise every few seconds. (See the legal aspects section below for the exact requirements)

Telephone conversation recorders record only one side of the conversation.
This is not true. Telephone conversation recorders should record all parties of a telephone call.
